School/Community Links

Many of the examples on previous pages are about schools looking outward and thinking beyond the confines of the classroom.

Fortrose Greenhouse and Garden Project

Pupils and staff at Fortrose Academy are developing links with the local community and a range of partners, including Highland Environmental Network, Careers Scotland, Community Education and the RIAS, to realise an enterprise based project centred on a school greenhouse and market garden.   This project was stimulated by a creative design for a greenhouse produced by an S4 pupil as part of a Standard Grade Art & Design course.

This innovative design, which combines a geodesic dome with the Earthship principle, has provided inspiration for the school and the wider community to come together to take the project forward.

The dome will be sited on a south facing sloping site within the school grounds where its presence will serve as a visible commitment by the school and community to the principles of sustainable development.

The greenhouse and adjacent gardening ground will provide a resource for learning opportunities for all, allowing both younger and older people to work, learn and grow together, making a positive contribution to the community.

Education for Sustainable Development, Enterprise in Education and Citizenship are educational developments which will be enhanced within the school curriculum through this project and it is hoped that links formed between the school, community and other agencies formed as this partnership develops can lead to further fruitful developments and promote Lifelong Learning in the Black Isle
