Charities as a focus
The Giving Nation Initiative has highlighted nationally ways in which
pupils in school can support needy causes, learn about social, environmental
and medical issues and also work in an enterprising manner across the
curriculum.

Charities can provide a link between Citizenship and Enterprise in Education. Kirkwall Grammar School has a model for making charities a major focus
throughout the secondary curriculum. Following the calendar approach of
Giving Nation, different charities are focussed on throughout the year. Senior pupils liaise with charities, arrange fund raising activities and
work with subject departments to raise awareness of each charity’s purpose.
Care has been taken to identify subject departments
with possible interests and inputs. For instance a medical charity (British
Heart Foundation) might involve English and Communication, Expressive Arts,
PSE, RE (transplants issues), Biology/ Chemistry, Business Studies and PE. The Charities Committees at Kirkwall Grammar School are run by empowering
S5/6 pupils, under the guidance of Mrs. M. Ewing, who choose to support a
couple of charities per year. Different choices each year ensures the
Sustainability of the projects. The Committees need to liaise directly with
the relevant charity bodies, thus building Enterprise links in and out of
school. Citizenship is achieved via the cross-curricular subject areas
relevant to a particular charity - see table as given. This will ensure a
widespread reception, targeting either whole school or specified years, from
which to encourage fund-raising. Kirkwall Grammar School is developing a
programme of involvement across the school curriculum and stages in which
charities act as a focus.
